Welcome to Humanist Matters, a new digital publication from the BC Humanist Association.
Across this site, you will find stories and commentary exploring progressive, non-dogmatic worldviews. We provide a voice for Humanists, promoting secularism, critical thinking, and a more compassionate world.
Why a Publication?
Over the years, our team at the BCHA has amassed a growing library of research on secularism in Canada. This has led us to connect with scholars of nonreligion across the country. We’ve also attracted countless stories from our members and supporters about their own fights for freedom of religion or even their deconversion stories.
A few years ago, we had the idea of collecting these bits of research and stories together into a book that would explore the academic and personal angles of our work. That project simmered in the background for a while, and we really struggled to find a proper home for it.
So instead, we’re launching this publication to give this writing a home.
We want to give a voice to the work we’re all doing to change the world. Data and numbers are one thing, but fundamentally, our work is about making life better for our family, friends and neighbours – here in British Columbia, across Canada and around the world.
What's in a Name?
We chose the name, Humanist Matters, to say two things: First, that we’re discussing issues from a humanist lens; and second, that we think humanism is important.
Across Humanist Matters you will find four categories of content.
In Community Updates, you will find writing from the BCHA team on our latest initiatives. Whether it’s announcing new projects (like this), delving into our reports, celebrating a local get-together or tying up the year, it’s your chance to hear from our staff and volunteers.
Our Features provide in-depth, long-form articles on complex topics like philosophy, science, and progressive issues. Watch for original research and academic analysis from scholars of nonreligion and secularism.
While Commentary pieces will provide evidence-based insights and analysis on current events, policy and social issues.
Finally, Humanist Voices is where you’ll be able to read those personal narratives, interviews and essays exploring individual Humanist journeys.
Throughout the publication, we aim to inform, inspire and engage the Humanist community through insightful, evidence-based content that promotes secularism, progressive values and ethical action.
